Key Thought

Jesus went to church! Well, not exactly church as we know it, but he did go to the assembly of God's people at the synagogue. Weren't there hypocrites, sinners, and worse in those meetings? Yes! But Jesus went to the synagogue because these people were searching for God, despite their failures and their problems. He used his visits as opportunities to teach the people. They recognized his authority. Do we? Are we responding to Jesus' words of comfort, challenge, and conviction?

Today's Prayer

Holy God and righteous Father, thank you for Jesus' example of going to meet with your people and blessing them with your truth. As I go to the assembly of folks who honor your name and praise Jesus for his sacrifice, I pray that you will still have Jesus' will and teaching be heard. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verses in Context

Jesus and his followers went to Capernaum. On the Sabbath day Jesus went into the synagogue and taught the people. The people there were amazed at Jesus' teaching. Jesus did not teach like their teachers of the law. Jesus taught like a person that had authority (power). While Jesus was in the synagogue, a man was there that had an evil spirit {from the devil} inside him. The man shouted, "Jesus of Nazareth! What do you want with us? Did you come to destroy us? I know who you are—God's Holy One!" Jesus said strongly, "Be quiet! Come out of the man!" The evil spirit made the man shake. Then the spirit made a loud noise and came out of the man. The people were amazed. They asked each other, "What is happening here? This man is teaching something new. And he teaches with authority (power)! He even gives commands to evil spirits, and the spirits obey him." So the news about Jesus spread quickly everywhere in the area of Galilee.

1 Corinthians 4:20

Jesus traveled to Nazareth, the town where he grew up. On the Sabbath day he went to the synagogue like he always did. Jesus stood up to read. The book of Isaiah the prophet was given to him. Jesus opened the book and found the place where this is written: "The Spirit of the Lord (God) has come to me. God chose me to tell good news to people that are poor. God sent me to tell people who are prisoners that they are free, and to tell the blind people that they can see again. God sent me to free the weak people from their suffering and to announce that the time has come for the Lord to show his kindness." Jesus closed the book. He gave the book back to the helper and sat down. Every person in the synagogue watched Jesus closely. Jesus began to speak to them. He said, "While you heard me reading these words just now, the words were coming true!"

Luke 4:16-21

People came to be baptized by John. John said to them, "You are like poisonous snakes! Who warned you to run away from God's anger that is coming? You must do the things that will show that you have really changed your hearts and lives. And don't think that saying, 'Abraham is our father' will help you. I tell you that God can make children for Abraham from these rocks here! The ax is now ready to cut down the trees. Every tree that does not make good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire."
