What Jesus Did! 'Don't Be Mislead' — Luke 21:8-11

Wednesday, November 25, 2015

Jesus said, "Be careful! Don't be fooled. Many people will come using my name. They will say, 'I am {the Christ}' and, 'The right time has come!' But don't follow them. When you hear about wars and riots, don't be afraid. These things must happen first. Then the end will come later." Then Jesus said to them, "Nations will fight against other nations. Kingdoms will fight against other kingdoms. There will be great earthquakes, sicknesses, and other bad things in many places. In some places there will be no food for the people to eat. Terrible things will happen, and amazing things will come from heaven to warn people.

Key Thought

Misunderstanding about Jesus' return has been a problem for many people. Many have been misled by signs they think they see in our world. Jesus, however, warns that many things will happen before his return—wars, rebellions, earthquakes, famines, epidemics, and heavenly signs. The key thing in each of these events is to not panic. God is in control and he will have Jesus come at the proper time. We just need to be prepared.

Today's Prayer

Father, with so many disturbing things going on in our world today, please still the struggles in my spirit and allow me to remain calm and faithful during troubling times. I know that I belong to you and I also know that when Jesus returns that I will go to be with you ... no matter when that time may come. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verses in Context

Some of the followers were talking about the temple. They said, "This is a beautiful temple, built with the best stones. Look at the many good gifts that have been offered to God!" But Jesus said, "The time will come when all that you see here will be destroyed. Every stone {of these buildings} will be thrown down to the ground. Not one stone will be left on another!" Some followers asked Jesus, "Teacher, when will these things happen? What will show us that it is time for these things to happen?" Jesus said, "Be careful! Don't be fooled. Many people will come using my name. They will say, 'I am {the Christ }' and, 'The right time has come!' But don't follow them. "But before all these things happen, people will arrest you and do bad things to you. People will judge you in their synagogues and put you in jail. You will be forced to stand before kings and governors. People will do all these things to you because you follow me. But this will give you an opportunity to tell about me. Don't worry about what you will say. I will give you the wisdom to say things that none of your enemies can answer. Even your parents, brothers, relatives, and friends will turn against you. They will kill some of you. All people will hate you because you follow me. But none of these things can really harm you. You will save yourselves by continuing strong in your faith through all these things.

Now, brothers and sisters, we don't need to write to you about times and dates. You know very well that the day the Lord comes again will be {a surprise} like a thief who comes at night. People will say, "We have peace and we are safe." At that time destruction will come to them quickly. Destruction will come like the pains of a woman who is having a baby. And those people will not escape. But you, brothers and sisters, are not living in darkness (sin). And so that day will not surprise you like a thief. You are all people who belong to the light (goodness). You belong to the day. We don't belong to the night or to darkness (evil). So we should not be like other people. We should not be sleeping. We should be awake and have self-control. People who sleep, sleep at night. People who get drunk, get drunk at night. But we belong to the day (goodness), so we should control ourselves. We should wear faith and love to protect us. And the hope of salvation should be our helmet. God did not choose us to suffer his anger. God chose us to have salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus died for us so that we can live together with him. It is not important if we are alive or dead {when Jesus comes}.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-10

But the Day when the Lord comes again will be a surprise like a thief. The sky will disappear with a loud noise. All the things in the sky will be destroyed with fire. And the earth and everything in it will be burned.

2 Peter 3:10

"Listen! I will come, {and it will be a surprise,} like when a thief comes! Happy is the person that stays awake and keeps his clothes with him. Then he will not have to go without clothes, and people will not see the things he is ashamed for them to see."

Revelation 16:15
