What Jesus Did! 'Good News of the Kingdom' — Luke 16:16

Thursday, September 24, 2015

"Before John the Baptizer came, God wanted the people to live by the law {of Moses} and the writings of the prophets. But since the time of John, the Good News about the kingdom of God is being told. Many people are trying hard to get into the kingdom of God."

Key Thought

Jesus helps us understand that the Good News of the Kingdom begins with John's preaching about the Christ. Moses and the prophets were the guides God had given for his people. However, with the coming of Jesus, a new time had begun. Jesus spoke of the Kingdom; he taught Kingdom values, spoke Kingdom parables, and displayed the power of God's Kingdom. This fresh message inspired fresh hope and ignited eager hearts. Luke's Gospel is written to help us hear that Good News of the Kingdom. It is a message of salvation and triumph rooted in the work of God throughout history and his great salvation that was accomplished in Jesus. It is God's Good News because it is about salvation, forgiveness, and the power of God's Spirit. It is God's Kingdom because his reign is seen in the repentance and life-change accomplished in the hearts and lives of those who confess Jesus as Lord.

Today's Prayer

LORD God Almighty, my Abba Father, thank you for your Good News! Thank you for Jesus, whose life, death, resurrection, exaltation, and outpouring of the Spirit make this Good News possible. I gladly live my life with Jesus as my Lord and pray that your Kingdom may be displayed in me. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Related Scripture Readings

This was after Jesus' death, but he showed the apostles that he was alive. Jesus proved this by doing many powerful things. The apostles saw Jesus many times during the 40 days after he was raised from death. Jesus spoke to the apostles about the kingdom of God.

Acts 8:12

Paul and the Jews chose a day for a meeting. On that day many more of these Jews met with Paul at his house. Paul spoke to them all day long. Paul explained the kingdom of God to them. Paul tried to persuade them to believe the things about Jesus. He used the law of Moses and the writings of the prophets to do this. Some of the Jews believed the things Paul said, but others did not believe. Paul stayed two full years in his own rented house. He welcomed all people that came and visited him. Paul told people about the kingdom of God. He taught about the Lord Jesus Christ. He was very bold (brave), and no one tried to stop him from speaking.
