The person that wants to save his life will lose it. And every person that gives his life for me will save it. It is worth nothing for a person to have the whole world, if he himself is destroyed or lost. (ERV)   Full Text

Key Thought

On earth, we get one lifetime. That's it. No more and no less. What we do in this life influences how we will spend eternal life. So if we live our lives trying to bring fulfillment to ourselves and achievement that brings honor to only us, we're going to end up losing everything. They don't put trailer hitches on hearses for a reason: all we take with us into the next life is our relationship with Jesus and those who love him. So let's not pursue what is insignificant, inconsequential, and ultimately what is perishable. The only lasting investment for our lives is Jesus!

Today's Verses in Context

One time Jesus was praying alone. His followers came together there. Jesus asked them, "Who do the people say I am?" The followers answered, "Some people say you are John the Baptizer. Other people say you are Elijah. And some people say you are one of the prophets from long ago that has come back to life." Then Jesus said to his followers, "And who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Christ from God." Jesus warned them not to tell anyone. Then Jesus said, "The Son of Man must suffer many things. He will be rejected by the older Jewish leaders, the leading priests, and teachers of the law. The Son of Man will be killed. But after three days he will be raised from death." Jesus continued to say to all of them, "If any person wants to follow me, he must say 'No' to the things he wants. That person must accept the cross (suffering) that is given to him every day, and he must follow me. The person that wants to save his life will lose it. And every person that gives his life for me will save it. It is worth nothing for a person to have the whole world, if he himself is destroyed or lost. If any person is ashamed of me and my teaching, then I will be ashamed of that person. I will be ashamed of that person at the time I come with my glory and with the glory of the Father and the holy angels. I tell you the truth. Some of you people standing here will see the kingdom of God before you die."

Luke 9:18-27 (ERV)

What Jesus Did
A 365 day devotional of Jesus lifeBack

Again Haggai received a message from the Lord. Haggai spoke this message: "You people think the right time has come for you to live in nice houses. You live in houses with beautiful wooden panelling on the walls. But the Lord's house is still in ruins! Now, the Lord All-Powerful says, 'Think about what is happening! You have planted many seeds, but you have gathered only a few crops. You have food to eat, but not enough to get full. You have something to drink, but not enough to get drunk. You have some clothes to wear, but not enough to keep warm. You earn a little money, but {you don't know where it all goes}. It's like there is a hole in your pocket!' "
Haggai 1:3-6 (ERV)

"Don't save treasures for yourselves here on earth. Moths and rust will destroy treasures here on earth. And thieves can break into your house and steal the things you have. So save your treasure in heaven. The treasures in heaven cannot be destroyed by moths or rust. And thieves cannot break in and steal that treasure. Your heart will be where your treasure is.
Matthew 6:19-21 (ERV)

At one time all these things were important to me. But I decided that those things are worth nothing because of Christ. Not only those things, but now I think that all things are worth nothing compared with the greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Because of Christ, I lost all those things {I thought were important}. And now I know that all those things are worthless trash. This allows me to have Christ. It allows me to be in Christ. In Christ I am right with God, and this being right does not come from my following the law. It comes from God through faith. God uses my faith in Christ to make me right with him.
Philippians 3:7-9 (ERV)
