The Golden City of 100 Spires at Christmas

December 8

Today I met with Vera and we had our first discussion about Revelation. Come to find out, she had never read the book before either. However, while visiting an art store recently, she told me how she found “some amazing wood carvings.” Upon inquiring about them she was told, “they are from the last book of the Bible, Revelation.”

So, as we talked she told me about what she saw and I attempted to describe, in my less than perfect Czech, what I experienced while reading Revelation yesterday.

After talking for a while, Vera surprised me with a question: “Do you think Revelation has anything to say about the Christmas season?” I had never thought about that before. I don’t know why but I answered, “I think Revelation has a lot to teach us about a number of topics — perhaps about Christmas as well.”

She then tried to explain the wood carvings she had seen but quite honestly, I was still having a hard time associating Christmas with Revelation, much less understanding how woodcuts could make one so excited. But I had to admit, her description sounded, at least, intriguing. So I asked if for our next lesson we could go to the art store and check them out.  Quite honestly I am thinking this will be a nice break from sitting in a classroom and parsing verbs but I didn’t mention that to Vera!
