The Golden City of 100 Spires at Christmas

December 27

The sun surprisingly appeared today, melting away most of the snow and ice. Since we have been feeling a bit tied-down over the past few days, we decided to take a road trip.  The country-side of the Czech Republic is well worth seeing but there were two sites that we have wanted to see. On our first day, we drove to Terezien, the site of a German concentration camp in the Czech Republic. We have been to a number of concentration camps through the years, but this one was different.  No doubt, it was much smaller than Dachau and not near as bleak as Auschwitz. Despite this, it was a moving and very sad day.

As we read about the camp and learned of its history, we discovered that Terezien was used as a ‘transition camp’; a place where many came on their way to somewhere else. Thousands came and went.  What grabbed our attention, however, was that there was one group of people who were forced to make Terezien home: children. Yes, Terezien cruelly imprisoned, tortured and killed some 35,00 ... .7,000 being children.

As we slowly made our way out of the camp and back to the car, I couldn’t help but think about my children ... and the Red Dragon. What if my children had lived here just some 50 years ago? Mightn’t this camp have been their home, due to the testimony of their parents? I pray that I would have had such faith, to proclaim Christ even in the face of such trial. And I pray that regardless of what happens in the future, they will have the faith to stand strong against the attacks of the Devil, the defeated but still powerful Red Dragon.
