Show Us the Father! - John 14:8-11

Philip said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father. That is all we need."
Jesus answered, "Philip, I have been with you for a long time. So you should know me. The person that has seen me has seen the Father too. So why do you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you truly believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The things I have told you don't come from me. The Father lives in me, and he is doing his own work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or believe because of the miracles I have done." (ERV) Full Text

Key Thought

Philip felt that he needed to see God to have greater faith in Jesus. Philip wanted the assurance of God's presence. Jesus reminded him of something the Lord had said again and again, "If you've seen me... or heard me... you have seen and heard the Father!" Jesus does the Father's will. He came to demonstrate the Father's love. Look at what he did, how he did it, and why he did it! Jesus is one with God!

Today's Verses in Context

Jesus said, "Don't be troubled. Trust in God. And trust in me. There are many rooms in my Father's house. I would not tell you this if it were not true. I am going there to prepare a place for you. After I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back. Then I will take you with me, so that you can be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going." Thomas said, "Lord, we don't know where you are going. So how can we know the way?" Jesus answered, "I am the way. I am the truth and the life. The only way to the Father is through me. If you really knew me, then you would know my Father too. But now you know the Father. You have seen him." Philip said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father. That is all we need." Jesus answered, "Philip, I have been with you for a long time. Or believe because of the miracles I have done. I tell you the truth. The person that believes in me will do the same things I have done. Yes! He will do even greater things than I have done. Why? Because I am going to the Father. And if you ask for anything in my name, I will do it for you. Then the Father's glory will be shown through the Son. If you ask me for anything in my name, I will do it.

John 14:1-14 (ERV)

What Jesus Did
A 365 day devotional of Jesus lifeBack

We tell you now about something that has existed (lived) since before the world began: This we heard, we saw with our own eyes, we watched, we touched with our hands. We write to you about the Word (Christ) that gives life. That Life was shown to us. We saw it. We can give proof about it. Now we tell you about that Life. It is Life that continues forever. This is the Life that was with God the Father. God showed this Life to us. Now we tell you the things that we have seen and heard. Why? Because we want you to have fellowship together with us. The fellowship we share together is with God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ.1 John 1:1-3 (ERV)

"I pray for these men. But I am also praying for all people that will believe in me because of the teaching of these men. Father, I pray that all people that believe in me can be one. You are in me and I am in you. I pray that these people can also be one in us, so that the world will believe that you sent me. I have given these people the glory that you gave me. I gave them this glory so that they can be one, the same as you and I are one. I will be in them, and you will be in me. So they will be completely one. Then the world will know that you sent me. And the world will know that you loved these people the same as you loved me. "Father, I want these people that you have given me to be with me in every place I am. I want them to see my glory. This is the glory you gave me because you loved me before the world was made.John 17:20-24 (ERV)

No man has ever seen God. But the only Son (Jesus) is God. He is very close to the Father (God). And the Son has shown us what God is like.John 1:18 (ERV)
