Nearness

I often hear this statement among married couples in the midst of a counseling situation: "We aren't as close as we once were". Even when asking about friendships, I have heard the remark: "We are not as close as we once were". And yes, in our spiritual evaluations, the remark is often made, "I'm not as close to the Lord as I once was."

I am not so sure that in our relationship with God that our position to Him is as important as His positional relationship is to us. How close is God? Paul wrote in Philippians 4:5, "Never forget the nearness of your Lord". He is closer than your breath. He is closer than your skin. Scripture reminds us of how much He cares for us...

  • He knows our names (John 10:3)
  • He numbers the hairs on our heads (Matthew 10:30)
  • He knows our thoughts (Psalm 139:2)
  • He counts the steps of our feet (Job 14:16)
  • He bottles the tears from our eyes (Psalm 56:8)
  • He holds our right hand in His hand (Psalm 73:23)
  • He supplies all our needs (Philippians 4:19)

I have a suspicion that God hasn't moved. He is just as close as ever, we just need to seek Him.
