Dr. Paul FaulknerConsumerism, by Dr. Paul Faulkner

Lindell Caulder, a historian, went to a Christian camp for college students from several nations and asked them to divide into national groups. Then he instructed each group to choose a song that represented their culture; one all in the group could approve and sing to the rest of the assembly.

Most chose folk songs from their country, but the Americans debated for over an hour, and they finally decided on (of all things!) a Coke jingle—“I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing”!

Caulder realized that the commercial culture was what really bound these American Christians together. Consumerism. Telling us to buy what we can’t afford with money that we don’t have to please people we don’t even know!

Surely somewhere there’s a message more important than a Coke jingle!
