“My wife has just passed away. What good is this money?”

Losing the Lottery

On November 26 of last year, Dennis discovered he had won $3 million in the lottery. It should have been a very happy day him. Instead, it turned out to be the saddest day of Dennis’ life!

You’d think that winning the lottery would be one of life’s greatest joys. But it hasn’t been for Dennis. On the day he won $3 million, his wife died of ovarian cancer at the age of 31. As he was handing his winning ticket to the store clerk, he said, “My wife has just passed away. What good is this money?” Dennis doesn’t have his precious wife to share it with.

An even better question as we pray for Dennis in his grief is: “What good is it if you spend a comfortable life on earth, but don’t spend an eternity with the Lord of life, Jesus Christ?”

Jesus said the man who wants to save his life will lose it, but the one who loses it for his sake will save it. Are you living for yourself or Jesus Christ? Paul told Timothy these words: “Don’t put your hope in wealth, it’s uncertain. Put your hope in God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.”
