It was the saddest moment of their 50 years of marriage.

Keep Hoping

How could a beautiful, endearing little child grow up and be an alcoholic? When you hear their story, you’ll know why that question will haunt the McGovern family for the rest of their lives.

On a cold, December night in 1994, at 11:30 P.M., the doorbell rang at a home in Washington, D.C. When George McGovern opened the door, his heart sank.

“Senator,” the officer said somberly,  “your daughter Teresa was found dead in a pile of snow. She was drunk and froze to death.”

When George broke this heartbreaking news to his wife, Eleanor, he heard a piercing cry he’ll never forget. It was the saddest moment of their 50 years of marriage.

They recalled a letter Terry had written to her mother two months earlier.  “I wonder if I’ll ever have a full life. I’m so sad, Mom. Please pray for me…”

For many years, Terry had battled depression and alcohol. In her last four years, she had been admitted to detox centers 68 times. The McGoverns felt totally powerless to help their daughter.

This story may touch a chord in your life if you are a parent in pain. I know it rips your heart out coping with a prodigal child. But let me urge you to NEVER give up. Keep clinging tenaciously to Jesus Christ. Let this Psalm give you strength for today:  “May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you.” (Psalm 33:22)
