Randy BectonTaking On the Kids, by Randy Becton   Real Audio

Eugene Helm faces a daily grind of raising five children by himself. How he does it will give you and me hope. His daily routine begins at 4:30 every weekday morning. He feeds and clothes 5 small children. Then they’re all out the door by 7:00. Four different bus rides. Works an 8 hour shift. Comes home and feeds and bathes the children. You know the routine.

Gene’s tasks are very draining, but there’s more to this story. Last year he was a very promising pharmacy student at a university in Chicago. But then the children lost their parents. Eugene is their uncle. He said, “I’m going home to raise those children.”

How does he keep on going?

Let his love put some fresh air into your tired heart.
His secret is his deep faith in God—daily prayer and Bible study are built into the daily routine. He and his children always attend church. Eugene does what he does by the power only Jesus Christ can provide. In the process, he’s providing a hopeful future for these precious children.

With Jesus, we can survive our ordeals, too. You may face some tough trials today yourself. Please let the steadfast example of Eugene Helm encourage you to keep on keeping on! Let his love put some fresh air into your tired heart. The writer of Hebrews says, “Consider Jesus, fix your eyes on him. You won’t grow weary. You won’t lose heart.”
