He knew how difficult their lives would be…

Ten Pounds of Sugar

Every December in Yellowsprings, Ohio, the widows of this small village receive a very unique gift: ten pounds of flour and ten pounds of sugar. Their benefactor is Wheeling Gaunt.

Wheeling Gaunt was a former a slave who became a wealthy land owner. Just before his death in 1894, he decided to dedicate 9 acres of farmland to the community for this very purpose. He said, “I want pounds of flour and pounds of sugar to be given to worthy widows from the land that I’m leaving.” He knew how much widows might night need these staples to make it through the cold winters. He knew how difficult their lives would be with their husbands recently having died and perhaps being left penniless.

I would have liked knowing Wheeling Gaunt, wouldn’t you? But think of 2 Corinthians 8 where Jesus is spoken of this way:

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, who though he was rich, yet for your sake became poor so that you through his poverty, you might become rich.”

Be sure today to thank Jesus Christ for your food, your shelter, and most importantly, for his being the Bread of Life.
