I’m sure you’ve been there. Nearly all of us have been. It may be a hospital room in the dark of the night waiting for someone we love to be released from their bondage to decay. Maybe it’s in a job with a bad manager who has it in for us. It may be a marriage that is loveless and lifeless. It may be a body that is diseased or broken and won’t let us go free. It may just be a traffic jam that “allows” us to observe the hands on our watch advance past the time of a very important meeting. It may be...

Even if our name is not Bush or Gore, we know what it is like to be STUCK; left hanging in the lurch while forces of impersonal fate seem to grind away beyond our control. No matter what the circumstances, we are STUCK! STUCK and we can’t seem to change anything about our maddening situation. STUCK in hard place, especially when the impending results offer an even more dismal outcome. STUCK in a place we don’t want to be! (Now you know why YUK rhymes with STUCK!)

How do we live in such a place? How do we face a new sunrise or endure the gathering darkness of the latest sunset? How do we muster enough courage to keep on keeping on each new day? How do we live as Jesus’ disciples when we are STUCK in a place we don’t want to be?

Whatever the game plan, let’s include the following in our strategies for “sur-thrival” — a strategy that allows us to not only survive, but thrive through the grace of God! Here are a couple of my strategies for sur-thrival, why don’t you see if you can come up with some of your own!

Prayer — Let’s ask God for wisdom so that we can face our challenges with a perspective closer to the Father’s and with a sense of joy knowing that he is at work in our lives. (James 1:2-5; Philippians 4:4-7)

Praise — Praise brings light into our darkness and reminds us of the greatness of God. More than just a spiritual discipline, praise is a gift from God to remind us of his power, majesty, and work in the lives of everyday folks like us. (1 Peter 1:3-9; Ephesians 1:3)

Perseverance — Sometimes just keeping on keeping on is crucial to our well being. This commitment to be people of determination, grit, and stick-to-it passion is the mark of faith that ultimately brings blessings to us and to those we love. (Hebrews 10:36; 12:1)

Presence — Recognizing that God is near us, that he will not abandon us, is absolutely crucial. But even more than that, we must trust that no matter what happens to us, no matter what Satan may throw in our path or the mistakes that we have made, God will be at work through those to bring us to a better place. (Romans 8:28; Philippians 1:6; 2:13)

Purpose — As Christians, we know that God created us and gave us a purpose for living from the moment of our conception. (Psalm 139:13-16) He is at work in us to make a difference in the world around us. The way we conduct ourselves during our time of being stuck is a powerful witness to those who observe us. (1 Peter 2:9-12; 3:13-16)

God didn’t promise us that everyday would be easy and fun. He did, however, promise us that our life would be victorious. The key to victory, however, sometimes involves handling stuck times with dignity, grace, and faith. If you’re stuck right now, please, don’t give up! God has great things ahead. Keep on keeping on by the loving power of God’s Spirit (Romans 5:1-5) until what is stuck gives way to the glorious freedom that God will reveal in us! (Romans 8:18-21)
