Free Fall Free Fall

In April 1988, the evening news reported on a photographer who was a skydiver. He had jumped from a plane along with numerous other skydivers, filming the group as they fell through the air and then opened their parachutes. On the film shown on the telecast, as the final skydiver opened his chute, the picture went berserk. The announcer reported that the cameraman had fallen to his death, having jumped out of the plane without his parachute. It wasn’t until he reached for the absent ripcord that he realized he was freefalling without a parachute.

When our faith is in the world, we are set up to take a fatal fall.
The apostle Peter tells us to “prepare our minds for action, be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed” (1 Peter 1:13 NIV). When our hearts and minds were enslaved to sin, life may have seemed exciting and fun. But, as with the hasty skydiver, we act thoughtlessly without thought of consequences and with deadly foolishness. When our faith is in the world, we are set up to take a fatal fall, like a parachuter without his gear. Faith in anything but an all-sufficient God can be tragic spiritually. Only with faith in Jesus Christ can we step into the dangerous excitement of life and be prepared for its twists and turns and falls.

Let’s take time today and pray that God will prepare our hearts and minds to serve Him fully and to “Trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). Let’s also take the time to speak to someone we know who may be experiencing a “spiritual freefall” and help them find their way to safety.
