Chaos Chaos

The New Brunswick, Canada newspaper “The Telegraph Journal,” carried the news story of an overturned tractor trailer that had flipped over on one of the local highways. The accident caused traffic to be stopped, while fire fighters tried to clean up the fuel spilled over the roadway. To soak up the spilled diesel fuel, the firefighters spread peat moss. However, during the clean up torrential rains came and washed away the materials prompting them to rush back and get some more to be used. They were so caught up in the crisis of the moment, that no one noticed that the cargo in the overturned trailer was peat moss.

Right before us is the simple solution.
Sometimes solutions are right in front of us, but because of a personal crisis, emerging events, or something else that has gotten our immediate attention, we often fail to see the solution to our problems that is in plain sight. We rush out to get the things that we need to get us through the crisis moment, when right before us is the simple solution.

On one occasion, the disciples found themselves in chaos. They were out in a boat on the sea of Galilee. A storm whipped across the waters and began to batter the boat in which they were riding. When they had tried everything, they finally awakened Jesus who stilled the storm. After calming the winds and the sea, he asked them: “Why are you so timid? How is it you have no faith?” (Mark 4:40) It is often the chaos that gets our attention and leaves us faithless and looking for answers to our dilemmas, disasters, and impending doom. Yet Jesus is always nearby and will join us in our storms and calm our angry seas if we will ask him.
