Spring is here! You can tell by all the sniffling, sneezing, itchy eyes, and allergy commercials on TV. Isn’t that a pessimistic way to view spring. Let’s try again.

Spring is here! You can tell by the greening grass, the flowers in bloom, the budding of the trees, and the gentle warmth in the air. All around us is the renewal of life. When you can get past the allergies, Spring is wonderful!

We need Spring. It is that season of great reminders. Reminders that life can be renewed -- what is dull and drab and dead comes to life and color and bloom. Reminders that things don’t stay the same -- growth and beauty wait for us around every corner. Reminders that love can be rekindled, joy can be found, and the days can grow longer with light and not just despair.

Spring is the season of renewal. It is no surprise why the resurrection of Jesus comes in the Spring. It is that consummate reminder that life is not bound by the normal limits of time and space, of life and death. So in this season of renewal, let’s take the opportunity to be renewed ourselves. But how do we do that?

First, we must admit that renewal must come from two very different trajectories -- our commitment to be renewed and the grace of God to empower that renewal. Both are essential. So our quest for renewal begins with a request for God’s grace to change, modify, enhance, and renew our lives by His power.

Second, we do things a little differently. A rut is nothing more than a long grave. So let’s get out of our ruts. Take a different way to work or school. Sit in a different spot in the cafeteria, theater, or church than you normally do. Go out of your way to meet new people. Try something new that you’ve never experienced before -- go to the ballet, go on a weekend trip to a place you’ve never been before, go to a new restaurant, read a new book, etc.

Third, expect things to be different. If you’ve asked God to be renewed and you’ve started doing new things, then expect to feel and be different. If you look for what is new and expect to be made new, you’ll find it. It’s probably been there all along, covered up by the negativity and cynicism of our day.

Finally, be reminded that the power of Spring and the power that raised Jesus from the dead can be released in you. Even if you don’t feel like you’re being renewed, live like it. Watch for God’s power to be released. You’ve heard of “try it before you buy it,” in marketing, well, this is “believe it before you see it” in living.

Spring is the season of renewal. Let’s don’t get left behind or just left with allergies. Let’s get out of our rut and be renewed.

"I pray ... that you may know ... his incomparably great power for us who believe. That same power he put to work when he raised Christ from the dead." (Ephesians 1:18-20)
