Our Real Job, by Randy Becton

Not too long ago, the 49 year old president of American Express resigned his job. The domestic policy adviser to the President resigned his job, too! Why? What would lead these highly successful men to resign what they had worked so hard to attain?

Baseball’s no fun when there’s no one there to applaud you. These highly successful men resigned their jobs so they could restructure their lives and spend more time with their children. They wanted to become better fathers! The advisor to the President resigned when his 10 year old son remarked, “Baseball’s no fun when there’s no one there to applaud you.”

Is there a new resolve that fathers are making to be better dads? I pray that’s true. Sometimes as men we forget that fathers need to nurture and train as well as discipline. That takes time. The New Testament says it this way—“Fathers, don’t exasperate your children, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”

As fathers, we have the primary responsibility to teach and model faith for our children. I’m challenging you, just as I challenge myself, to wake up, reevaluate, and recommit to our vital role as fathers.

May God bless us as we seek to reflect his love, strength, and grace to our children.
