More Than a Title - Mark 3:9-12
Jesus saw the many people. So he told his followers to get a small boat and make it ready for him. Jesus wanted the boat so that the many, many people would not push against him. Jesus had healed many people. So all the sick people were pushing toward him to touch him. Some people had evil spirits {from the devil} inside them. When the evil spirits saw Jesus, they bowed before him and shouted, "You are the Son of God!" But Jesus commanded the spirits strongly not to tell people who he was. (ERV) Full TextKey Thought
Jesus is more than a miracle maker and was never a title seeker. Instead, Jesus ministers to show God's love and compassion, yet does not want his ministry of preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom thwarted by those who think they know who he is. So often today, we know Jesus by his titles as Christian insiders. In times of distress, we want him to be our miracle maker. Jesus, however, is Lord and Master. We come to him and receive his grace, mercy, salvation, comfort, life, and Spirit. Yet Jesus is still Lord. He is not our servant boy and he is much more than any title. He will define who he is by what he does. In Mark's Gospel, this means that he will go to the Cross and define what it means to be Son of God and the Christ (Messiah). In the process, he also sets us an example for how we should live—a life of sacrificial service to bring others to God. So if Jesus is to be more than a title for us, then his life must be seen in us!
Today's Prayer
Holy and loving God, my Abba Father, let the beauty, passion, conviction, love, commitment, and obedience of your Son be seen in my life. Teach me what it means for Jesus not only to be my Savior, but also to be my Lord. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
Today's Verses in Context
Jesus went away with his followers to the lake. Many people from Galilee followed him. Many, many people also came from Judea, from Jerusalem, from Idumea, from the area across the Jordan River, and from the area around Tyre and Sidon. These people came because they heard about all the things Jesus was doing. When the evil spirits saw Jesus, they bowed before him and shouted, "You are the Son of God!" But Jesus commanded the spirits strongly not to tell people who he was.-- Mark 3:7-12 (ERV)
