...for the wicked boast...

    by Scott Owings

It is only natural for children to boast. At first, this even seems cute to the adoring parent as the child boasts of their new toy, accomplished feat, or good grades. While we want our kids to strive for excellence, and to be proud of their actions, we would do well to pass on Solomon's wise advice: "Let another praise you and not your own mouth." (Proverbs 27:2)

There are several things that we can do to help prevent our children from growing into what is "natural" and be molded into what is "spiritual."

First, let's praise our children often. If our children hear us praising them for who they are and what they've done, they will be affirmed and thus be less likely to feel the need to boast about themselves before others.

Second, let's take every opportunity available to pray in the presence of our children, praising and thanking God for entrusting us with such priceless treasures.

And finally, let's tell our children over and over again about the grace of Jesus Christ. His grace not only saves us, it allows us to enjoy life, use our intelligence, have friends, and every other thing in which we might be tempted to boast.

The wicked boast in what they've done; the righteous in what is being done by God in Christ!
