Dietrich Bonhoeffer urged us to be careful in our assumptions about the Christian life. He was a great Christian writer, and a stalwart for God who was later executed by the Nazis in World War II. He understood firsthand that God is not just a God of happy emotions, but also a God who faces us with heavy trials and even unhappiness at times.

God is not just a God of happy emotions.

    When God brings us into deep water and when things don’t go our way, we have a tendency to call it a failure. It may be that we have got our ideas about what the Christian life is all about way out of touch with God’s overall plan. It may be that God’s people and God’s church have no loftier position than when we are faced with opposition or death or dying.

    I believe even in those worst moments we may more clearly see God’s glory than any other time. We can learn then — more than ever — to be thankful for whatever God brings into our lives.
