Special Note: There is no greater need in most churchers than really good leadership. Where will that leadership come from? We invite you to join us in beginning a special ministry to pray for new leaders. We invite you to join our special email list. Each Sunday, we will send out a verse of Scripture, a short thought about that verse, and a brief prayer. We will share together in praying for God to be at work raising up new leaders for his Church. If you are interested in joining this email list, please send an email to join-hopeforthefuture@lists.heartlight.org.

“He is not home now! You should find him at church,” she answered apologetically.

“During the week, he goes to work. On the weekend, he does church work, not to mention all the meetings he has to attend in church.” She explained why I was not able to find her husband on Sunday afternoon.

Why would anyone devote so much time and effort to be the leaders in church serving as elders or deacons? And what are the benefits of serving as elders and deacons?

In laying down the qualifications for a church leader, the Apostle Paul reminded Timothy of the importance and the blessing of being one God’s leaders.

Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus. (1 Timothy 3:1,13 NIV)

The roles of the shepherd and servants of God’s people are so important. Those who wish to take up the responsibilities must be called and prompted by the Holy Spirit. And they must meet very high character requirements.

The roles of the shepherd and servants of God’s people are so important.
What are the rewards? It is neither financial gain nor respect or prestige, but praise from God Himself, if we serve well.

Would I consider serving in church because it is a noble calling and I will gain excellent standing and assurance in faith? Is there an irrepressible urge to shepherd and serve His people in me?

Let’s pray that God will lay this opportunity, task, and reward on potential new leaders in all of our churches!

Let’s pray God’s blessing and protection on all those who do serve!

Let’s answer that call if God’s people and God’s Spirit place this call on our heart!
