Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matt 28:19-20, NASU) In attempting to recruit John Sculley, the 38-year-old President of Pepsi-Cola, Steve Jobs, founder of Apple Computer, issued a tremendous challenge. He asked: Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water or do you want a chance to change the world? (John Sculley, Odyssey) A chance to change the world! Now theres a challenge that will do one of two things for a person. It will either scare them silly, or it will cause them to rise to the challenge and do greater things than they ever dreamed possible. I know, that Steve Jobs challenge was business. I know he had a great product in mind, and I know he was talking about the technological revolution that the personal computer has helped create. But, the essence of the challenge is one worth hearing again, in a different context.
Listen to me carefully. Were in the process of building something great. Its not great because were great. Quite the contrary, were doing something great because the product of our work is great. Let me put it this way. What were doing is providing the way for people to find Gods will for themselves. Were helping them learn about a loving Creator, whose greatest desire is to give them eternal life. Were helping them reconnect with God through Jesus Christ, and in the process, they are finding forgiveness of sins, learning how to live in positive, productive ways, and discovering that life has a purpose far greater and much more significant than that which humans concoct. Were putting people in touch with divine purposes, eternal plans, heavenly resources and goals. We are helping people take their tired, broken lives and give it all up for an abundant life that exceeds all the dreams of earth-bound creatures. In short, were changing the world. Someone may say, That sure sounds like a pompous attitude. No. For you see, it has little to do with us other than the fact that were the tools, the messengers, the laborers who are effecting Gods work in the world. God is using us to get his work done, and that work results in something more glorious than the mind of man can conceive. I know that you must involve yourselves in all sorts of things, but let me urge you to rethink what youre doing. However important you think all the activities of your life to be, youve got a chance to change the world. Help us build the church of Jesus Christ, the body of saved, redeemed souls, who are being transformed into the image of Gods son.
