I have wonderful memories of my grandmother’s house — the soft creaking of the wooden floors, window units humming on hot summer days, and inviting smells from the kitchen drifting through the house. But the house had a problem. Built in the 1930’s on a bad foundation on the soft, wet soil of the Texas Gulf Coast, my grandmother’s house was gradually sinking into the ground. The problem was so serious that fixing it would cost more than the value of the house. Eventually, my grandmother reluctantly sold her home of more than 40 years and moved into a structurally sound retirement home.
No feature of a home is more important than its foundation.
No feature of a home is more important than its foundation. Jesus speaks in Matthew 7:24-27 of the wise man and foolish man and their choices of foundations for their homes. When you buy a house, a lot of attention is given to the condition of the foundation. Appraisers and insurance agents check it thoroughly for damage and weak areas. What a waste it would be to so carefully inspect a home’s physical foundation while neglecting its infinitely more important spiritual foundation. Jesus said in verse 24 that those who act upon his words have a solid foundation for their homes.
When was the last time you checked the spiritual foundation of your home?
