The All Seeing Eye The All Seeing Eye
    by Dwight Evans

I was recently reminded of this metaphor from my youth at a spiritual renewal workshop. The speaker appropriately pointed out that this metaphor brought fear to many hearts. Later in the day, as I sat in a small group discussion where several people shared heart-rending stories of challenges in their lives, I was struck by another powerful metaphor of the “All Seeing Eye.” I asked myself, “Just what does this ‘All Seeing Eye’ actually see?”

    Immediately, I knew the answer.

The “All Seeing Eye” represents God’s observation of our lives on this earth. I know exactly what that eye sees, because God came down, walked among us as the Son, and recorded for us those things that catch His eye and touch His heart. By looking at the things...

Jesus saw, we know also those things that the “All Seeing Eye” sees.
Jesus saw blind people and he healed them.
Jesus saw lame people and he healed them.
Jesus saw diseased people and he healed them.
Jesus saw grieving people and he comforted them.
Jesus saw hungry people and he fed them.
Jesus saw people ignorant of God’s love and he taught them.
Jesus saw tormented people and he freed them.
Jesus sees hearts.

Is there condemnation in this “All Seeing Eye”? Absolutely.

Jesus saw hard hearts.
Jesus saw unmerciful, unforgiving and uncompassionate hearts.
Jesus saw religious arrogance.
Then Jesus appropriately taught, warned or condemned.

Just what does this “All Seeing Eye” actually see?
But mostly, Jesus saw broken hearts, broken spirits and broken lives. To those he gave grace, mercy, forgiveness, comfort, and hope. The “All Seeing Eye” of Jesus condemned a specific few so that their hearts might be changed. Primarily, the “All Seeing Eye” of Jesus healed, comforted, taught, and loved the multitudes.

That’s exactly what the “All Seeing Eye” sees today. God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.

When you think of the “All Seeing Eye”, look honestly at your heart. You will know what God sees.

The “All Seeing Eye” is infrequently stern and frequently compassionate.
Often it is the eye of the father running to embrace the prodigal son.
Often it is the eye of the shepherd seeking the lost sheep.
Often it is the eye of the Good Samaritan tending those that have been ambushed.
Often it is the eye of the Savior looking out over Jerusalem longing to gather the people as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings so that they can be protected.

Read the gospels, watch the Son and let God tell you what His “All Seeing Eye” sees. Use the hope that emerges as a foundation to continue to seek Him, trust in His word, rest in His peace, rejoice in His forgiveness, and walk in His paths.

There is an “All Seeing Eye” watching over you, and in that promise, you can rejoice!
