The story is told of a young stranger to the Swiss Alps that was making his first climb and was accompanied by two seasoned guides. It was a steep, hazardous accent, but he felt secure with one guide ahead and one following. For hours they climbed. And now, breathless, they reached for those rocks protruding above them the summit. The guide ahead wished to let the stranger have the first glorious view of heaven and earth, and moved aside to let him go first. Forgetting the gales that would blow across those summit rocks, the young man reached the summit and leaped to his feet. But the chief guide immediately dragged him down.
Far too many times we want to stand tall in our pride and accomplishments. We enter Gods house to worship in our own pride and power, and forget to approach him with reverence and respect. David reminds us in Psalm 5:7 "By thine abundant lovingkindness I will enter Thy house. At Thy holy temple I will bow in reverence for Thee." To boast of knowing and understanding God requires a humble submission. After all, any other boasting is just blowing in the wind. |
