Can You Get Me the Moon? Can You Get Me the Moon?
    by Dennis Downing

“Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” (John 14:13, RSV)

Not long ago our five year old daughter, Paulina asked me to get her the moon. It was not an idle request. She meant it. She was utterly convinced I could do it. To prove that, in typical Paulina fashion, she already had a plan worked out on how I could climb up into the night sky and bring down the moon.

If I had it within my power that night I would have gone out and gotten the moon for Paulina. I might not have gone out for an ice cream cone or rented a movie. But, I would have gone out for the moon. It was not the simple fact of the request which moved me, but my daughter’s faith in me as her father.

I would have gone out for the moon.
I was flattered and honored. I was proud to be Paulina’s father. It occurred to me that the more fantastic, the more unbelievable our request, the more sincere the faith it reveals. And thereby we honor the one to whom we appeal. Could it be that we might intercede so whole-heartedly, so believingly, that God would actually be honored? Is it possible you might ask something of him that would actually make him proud to be your father?

There is something only a child can give and only a true father can receive. If your love for God is real and you trust in him is true, ask whatever you will of him, for both will receive in return.

QUOTE: “Prayer does not fit us for the greater works; prayer is the greater work.” —Oswald Chambers, “My Utmost for His Highest”, Oct. 17th.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, we thank you for prayer, this means by which we draw closer to you. By prayer we are involved in bringing others closer as well. Through intercession we hope to obtain not only your response, but your pleasure as well. In drawing nearer to you and at the same time pleasing you we have already gained all that really matters. Amen.
